Last week, Jason made a headboard for me and also renovated my bathroom.  After hours and hours of manual labor, he needed a real dinner.  Not my Jennie-O Turkey Burgers and veggies.  He needed some real meat!

So I grabbed some minute steak out of my deep freeze and started searching for the perfect sandwich.  (Aside: The quarter-cow I bought back in July is still feeding our family!  Talk about an investment!!!)  I checked a few sites and stumbled upon the Marlboro Man Sandwich at Pioneer Woman.

Here is the thing about Pioneer Woman.  She cooks using very basic ingredients.  Every recipe has a minimum of a stick of butter which negates the need for a billion ingredients with flavor.  Butter is good.  If there are a ton of ingredients to any one of her recipes, they are usually spices and sauces...and always a stick of butter.  Easy enough.  You can also have a guarantee that if Pioneer Woman included the recipe on her cooking blog, it is worth making and will be a fast crowd-pleaser. 

But, what I don't understand is how she so tiny and cute???  I have decided that she does not ever eat her own food.  She spends the day eating salads.  Maybe she munches on a apple every now and then.  But does she mean to convince me that she actually ATE a Marlboro Man Sandwich????  Wait until you see how we make it.  Then decide whether that sandwich matches this cute tiny little woman.


Now her husband, Marlboro Man, spent the day outside farming and earned every last ounce of butter in his Sandwich.  Jason also earned every last bit of butter.  I...did not.  But did I eat a sandwich????  YOU BETCHA!!!  And it was glorious.

Here's how you make it:

Ingredients:
■  1 whole Large (or 2 Small) Onions
■  2 sticks Butter (See what I mean???  We only used 1 stick for the whole recipe.)
■  2 pounds (to 3 Pounds) Cube Steak (tenderized Round Steak That's Been Extra Tenderized)
■  Lawry's Seasoned Salt (or Similar Seasoned Salt)
■  ½ cups (approximately) Worcestershire Sauce
■  Tabasco Sauce, To Taste (We didn't use Tabasco)
■  4 whole French/deli Rolls (I just popped a Pillsbury Italian Loaf in the oven)
Slice the onions and cook in a two tablespoons of butter

I could just eat this without the meat.  YUM!!

Slice the steak meat and season with Season All.

Put the onions aside and throw two more tablespoons of butter in the pan over high heat.  If you worked out today, go ahead and throw three tablespoons in.  You earned it, right?


Add the meat in a single layer.  Cook it for a minute, flip it over and cook for one minute more.



Add 1/2 cup of Worcestershire sauce and 1 tablespoon of butter.  Add cooked onions and stir.


So simple!  And soooo delicious.


I stirred the leftovers into baked pototoes the next day and it was amazing.

Okay, I just want to put it out there that perhaps Pioneer Woman exercises perfect self-control and only eats a small portion of the sandwich.  Perhaps.  However, after tasting the sandwich...I doubt it.

  1. I made this last week. It is awesome, but yeah I had to cut the butter as well. I couldn't in good conscience use 2 sticks of butter either, LOL

  2. Wow, Lisa, that sandwich looks absolutely amazing! My family would probably woof down the entire thing in one sitting so there'd be no leftovers, but it's work a shot. Maybe I'll put it on whole grain French bread AND reduce the butter to one stick instead of two to make it a healthier version LOL. Thanks for sharing. I love the Pioneer Woman.

  3. Sounds lovely - I love dinners that are simple and delicious. But I think one stick of butter was probably just right - two sticks is kind of scary!!

  4. I. Love. Pioneer Woman. I want to be her someday when I grow up. Or rather, I'd like my blog to be her blog someday when it grows up.

    She's got a recipe in her cookbook for this amazing cheesy olive spread, but like you, I have to cut the 2 sticks butter called for in half... maybe her "1" button doesn't work on her keyboard, so she just types "2" instead... :)
